Over the course of these “Inside Looks” of the winemaking process, we’re going to come across many terms that may need clarification. As in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, you’ll have the option to watch the movies first, or read the ‘books’ first (This Blog).
Our first stop on the trail is Grasso Vineyards. Some quick background information on Grasso Vineyards: it’s owned by it’s namesake, Frank Grasso, and is located in the Coombsville AVA of the Napa Valley. If you’re familiar with the area (Napa city proper), it’s off of Hagen road, on the north eastern side of town in what is considered the south eastern side of the Valley. This is a cooler climate compared to up valley, and this aspect alone brings a special terroir to the wine. Some notable red wine producers in the area are Caldwell, Palmaz, Frazier, and Far Niente’s; “Dolce” brand is also produced in the same region. To put that information in perspective and how diverse this particular growing region is, know that these are premiere names in red wine production along with (IMHO) the best dessert wine producer in the Napa Valley (“Dolce”). Keep in touch over the next few days as I’ll post information that will help you understand some of the concepts presented in the video.
